High cholesterol. It seems like a fashion trend almost. One with huge risks though. Cardiologist, Dr. Catherine De Maeyer will tell you what you can do about it and how you can keep your cholesterol levels in check.

 

Hi Catherine. Welcome to the studio.

 

Hi.

 

Today's topic is high cholesterol. But what is that about?

 

Cholesterol is part of the lipid fraction of the blood. It's composed of small lipids. Stones. Cholesterol is very important for the body. You need it for example, for the cell membrane. Certain hormones are formed by cholesterol molecules. But the problem is that the bad cholesterol, the LDL or the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is a bad guy. It causes plaque formation in arteries, so in big blood vessels. And if these plaques are ruptured or they get too big, you can get ischemia. So a lack of oxygen for example, the brain, which causes a stroke. Or in the heart which causes an acute myocardial infarction.

 

So the trick is to get the good cholesterol high...

 

Yeah.

 

And the low cholesterol low.

 

Exactly.

 

But how do you do that?

 

Well we can't always get it okay with the things you eat. But it's a very big part of the prevention of high cholesterol. So you have to avoid lipids or fat from animals. Like meat, or butter for example. So, dairy products. And you have to eat as much as you can of vegetables and fruit. And lipids of a plant origin.

 

So, olive oil for example is a good replacement for traditional...?

 

Yeah. And nuts as well. That's also good. So another part of the prevention of high cholesterol is exercise. Especially the HDL, the good guy, is elevated by doing regular exercise. So apart from the foods, you also have to take care of the exercise.
